2 girls die in shack fire

Johannesburg - A woman and two girls burnt to death in shack fires at informal settlements in Cape Town on Sunday, the city's disaster management said.

Spokesperson Wilfred Solomons-Johannes said two girls, aged eight and nine, died when a shack burnt down at Cornflower Street, in Phillipi East early on Sunday.

The circumstances of the fire were not known. The girls' identities were being withheld.

Solomons-Johannes said the woman, Nolutando Nozana, 38, burnt to death in her shack in Lusaka Informal Settlement.

He said six shacks were destroyed and 24 people were displaced in the fire at 2.50am on Sunday.
