Bloemfontein - Two men have been arrested for attacking an elderly man in Koppies, Free State police said on Monday.

Sergeant Phumzile Makaula said the two robbed and stabbed Tobie Loubser, 83, at his farm in Koppies on Friday night.

They demanded R40 000 from him, which he did not have.

"They took R800 from him and demanded the key to the safe where they took his pistol before they stabbed him in the face and arms," she said. They then drove off in his car.

Police on a routine patrol spotted the car on Saturday night, they stopped it and found two men inside. The two told them they were running an errand for Loubser.

Police searched them and found Loubser's pistol and credit cards.

They took the men to Loubser's farm and arrested them when they found him tied up in a pool of blood.

Makaula said the two appeared in court on Monday, but that details were not immediately available.

She said Loubser was recovering at home after being discharged from hospital.

The Christian Democratic Party (CDP) expressed its shocked at the attack.

"We realise that it is impossible to react to every single case of violent crime committed in the country, but this incident was so extremely cruel that it can not be ignored," CDP leader Reverend Theunis Botha said in a statement

"We pray for a speedy recovery for Loubser," he said.
