Durban - Two eThekwini municipal contract workers were killed and a third was critically injured when they were struck by an out-of-control bakkie that careered off John Zikhali Road in Durban on Friday.

The three had been sitting on the verge at the time of the accident.

RescueCare spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said the cause of the crash remained unclear.

“We are still trying to piece together exactly what happened, but from the scene we can say that four vehicles were involved. One was a minibus carrying school children. Nine of the scholars were injured and were treated by paramedics,” he said.

Jamieson said that when emergency service personnel arrived at the scene, they found two workers trapped beneath the bakkie that had ploughed into them.

“Only one of the workers under the wreckage was alive. She sustained critical injuries and we immediately began working to stabilise her.

"She was our chief concern because she had the most life-threatening injuries of all the victims. Two others, a man and a woman, died before we arrived at the scene,” Jamieson added.

Traffic on the main arterial route, which runs alongside the Greyville Racecourse, was temporarily disrupted.
