Durban - Two people were killed and four others were injured when a truck carrying scrap metal crashed into a bridge barrier on the R56 in Umkomaas Valley on Wednesday night.

KZN EMS spokesperson Robert McKenzie said several people had been on the back of the truck ferrying the payload of scrap.

“Reports from the scene are that sadly two people have been killed in the crash. KZN EMS paramedics treated four other patients who had been injured,” he said.

“One of the patients was critically injured and was treated at the scene before being transported to Christ the King hospital in Ixopo for continued medical care.”

He added that three other people, after being examined by the paramedics, decided that they did not want to be transported to hospital.

“The police were also at the scene of the crash and are investigating the circumstances resulting in the crash,” he said.
