Pretoria - Two people, including a child, were killed when a taxi transporting school children overturned on the R101 in the north of Pretoria on Tuesday morning, said paramedics.

"The taxi apparently hit a bridge and overturned," said Tshwane emergency services spokesperson Johan Pieterse.

The taxi driver and child were declared dead on the scene.

Thirteen other children sustained critical injuries while five others were in a serious condition.

The children were treated on the scene before being transported to nearby hospitals.

It was unclear what led to the crash.

The crash was the fifth reported accident involving groups of children in the last two weeks.

On Monday, 13 children were injured when a truck and car collided on the N3 in Alberton, on the East Rand.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said one of the children was critically injured in the crash.

On Wednesday, seven children died in Pietermaritzburg when a bakkie overturned and crashed into a house.

On Thursday, 22 children were injured in a bus accident in Umlazi, south of Durban. All were under the age of 13.

On Friday, eight children were injured when a car hit them outside their school in Reservoir Hills, Durban.
