Johannesburg - Two men died when their shack burnt down at the Skiet informal settlement in Butterworth, Eastern Cape police said on Friday.

Police spokesperson Jackson Manatha said the men were last seen on Wednesday evening.

"It is alleged that the two, aged 25 and 27, were last seen on Wednesday 3 April at about 20:00 requesting a stick of matches," he said.

"Their neighbour said she saw flames coming from their shack on Wednesday at about 22:00."

Manatha said it was unclear why she did not call police or the fire brigade.

The burnt shack was discovered on Thursday morning.

"The remains of the deceased were found inside the shack and Butterworth police have opened an inquest docket to investigate the matter further."

The cause of the fire was still unknown.
