2 killed in Western Cape fires

Cape Town - Two people were killed in separate shack fires in the Western Cape on Monday morning, Cape Town disaster risk management centre said.

Spokesperson Wilfred Solomons-Johannes said, in the one incident, Mobophini Jeku was trapped in her burning shack in Witsand informal settlement in Atlantis around 02:20.

She died on the scene.

In the second incident, a man was killed in a fire in Lavender Hill, Solomons-Johannes said.

The man's shack caught alight before 05:00 in Hill View Heights informal settlement and he could not escape.

The cause of both fires was unknown.
