Mthatha - An 11-year-old girl is one of two people who have died in two separate road accidents over the weekend in Willowvale and Butterworth, Eastern Cape police said on Sunday.

The girl was hit by a car along the N2 road near Zingqayi Village, Butterworth on Saturday morning, said Captain Jackson Manatha.

She died on the scene. Police are still in the process of officially notifying all her family members of her death.

The cause of the accident is not known.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident, the 30-year-old driver of a car that was travelling on the R408 road from Dutywa to Willlowvale on Saturday morning, died after the vehicle overturned.

The driver died in hospital, while three passengers remain in a critical condition.

Two cases of culpable homicide have been opened by provincial police.
