Bloemfontein - Two men have been arrested in connection with the killing of a 2-year-old girl in Wepener, Free State police said on Friday.

The two, aged 30 and 35, were arrested on Thursday evening following information from community members, said police spokesperson Sergeant Yanga Ngcukana.

The girl was killed and her parents were injured when someone fired into their shack on Tuesday night.

She was hit in the head while strapped to her mother's back. She died on the scene.

The mother was shot in the chest and arm and her husband in the arm. The parents were recovering in the Pelonomi Hospital in Bloemfontein.

Eight spent cartridges were found on the scene. The men were expected to appear in the Wepener Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
