Polokwane - Two men and a boy were killed when a hippopotamus attacked a group of people attempting to enter the country through the Limpopo River, near the Beit Bridge border with Zimbabwe, police said on Thursday.

Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Ronel Otto said the group of undocumented foreigners were trying to cross the river on Wednesday night when they were attacked.

"A child who survived, but was injured, alerted passersby this morning [Thursday], and they informed the police," she said.

ER24 spokesperson Pieter Rossouw said the injured child was believed to be around 8-years-old.

The child was taken by provincial medical services to the Musina Hospital.
