Cape Town – Two men have been sentenced to life imprisonment for killing well-known Johannesburg businessman Eugene Papo, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said on Monday.

The Khayelitsha Priority Crimes also handed down five years imprisonment to Siyabulela Nyewe and Andile Mpinda on Friday for possession of an unlicensed firearm.

Western Cape NPA spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said Papo and his friends were initially going to visit a tavern in Langa in December 2013, but changed their plans at the last minute.

They went to the Corner Lounge in Gugulethu instead.

"As they were about to leave, standing next to his Porsche vehicle and talking to his friends, two men walked up to him. The first male shot him, at close range, twice in the head. As he fell, the second male also shot him twice. Both gunmen ran away and got into a vehicle."

Ntabazalila said the tavern owner, Nkululeko Tuntubele, came out with a bottle of vodka the deceased had ordered before leaving.

He recognised the two gunmen, as he had known them for many years.

The State relied on his evidence as a credible and reliable witness.

Papo was a managing partner at Jaguar Capital and Qualibooks Naledi.

The NPA welcomed the sentence.
