Two suspects appeared in the Umlazi Magistrate's Court on Wednesday on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm, attempted murder and discharging a firearm in public following a shootout with police officers on Monday.

"On January 7, 2019, at 22:30, Umlazi police officers were conducting crime prevention duties at V Section when they noticed two men discharging firearms in public.

"The suspects spotted the police officers and a shootout ensued," Captain Nqobile Gwala said in a statement on Wednesday.

One of the suspects sustained gunshot wounds and was taken to a hospital for medical attention under police guard while the other was found hiding in a bush was arrested.

The suspects, aged 36 and 38, were detained at Umlazi police station.

Police recovered two 38 special revolvers with ammunition that are still subject to ballistic testing to establish if they were used in other crimes in KwaZulu-Natal.

"We encourage communities to report such criminal behaviour immediately to their local police and not to allow criminals to move freely in their neighbourhoods," Gwala said.
