Pietermaritzburg - A Pietermaritzburg security guard is on life support after a truck crashed into a bakkie he was travelling in.

The guard, who is employed by G4S Security, was on his way to his branch office with four colleagues when a truck allegedly cut in front of them on Market Road in Mkondeni.

ER24 paramedics said they arrived at the scene and saw the two men inside the bakkie in serious condition while the three at the back of the bakkie sustained moderate injuries.

“Rescue services had to use the jaws-of-life equipment to free the trapped driver in an hour-long operation. Once freed, paramedics treated the patients for their injuries and provided the critically injured patients with advanced life support intervention,” said ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring.

All five men were taken to Mediclinic Hospital.

Marketing and communications officer for G4S Security Yash Bridgmohan confirmed the men were employed by the company. Bridgmohan said one man is on life support and was in a critical condition yesterday
