Johannesburg - Two suspected criminals were shot dead at a Germiston industrial area on Monday morning, Gauteng police said.

A policeman was also wounded, said Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini.

Police officers were following up on information that two suspicious-looking people were seen driving around the area.

"They observed them as they were entering a business premises. On following them, a shoot-out between them ensued and one of the officers, a captain, was slightly wounded in the face," he said.

"Two suspects were also shot and died at the scene."

The policeman was taken to hospital and is in a stable condition.

A 9mm pistol was recovered at the scene.

The vehicle used by the pair was impounded for further investigation but was not reported stolen.

"The suspects are unknown and further investigation is continuing to establish their next-of-kin and whether they had been involved in other crimes," said Dlamini.
