Johannesburg - Two women were gang-raped by a group of seven men armed with pangas and knives in Tshepisong, on the Johannesburg West Rand, at the weekend, police said on Tuesday.

The incident happened around 21:00 on Sunday when they were walking from Tshepisong Phase 5 to Tshepisong West, Warrant Officer Solomon Sibiya said.

A male friend was with the two women.

The group of seven approached the friends.

"The complainant tried to flee from the suspects, but was caught by one of them.

"All seven suspects took turns raping the complainant and her friend. The complainant’s male friend was also undressed and their cellphones taken."

Sibiya said this was the second incident in which victims were ambushed, raped and robbed by a group in the Tshepisong area.

Police called on the community to assist with any information that might help them track down the suspects.

Kagiso station commander Brigadier Sipho Ngubane said it was time for residents in Tshepisong to stand up as one and report the criminals.

"They are from within Tshepisong, so someone noticed them before or after the incident.

"We want to continue to warn residents, especially women not to walk in open and dark spaces at night. Rather use the streets where you can be visible and everyone can see you. Do not give perpetrators an easy way to get to you", he said.
