Lephalale – The body of a two-year-old girl, who went missing after her parents allegedly fell asleep under a tree, was found on Monday.

However, police said no foul play was suspected and that an inquest docket had been opened.

Limpopo police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said the girl disappeared near Emelman village, outside of Lephalale, when she went for a walk with her parents on Saturday.

"It is alleged that a couple, suspected of being intoxicated, were walking with their two-year-old baby girl and her four-year-old sister. The couple decided to rest under the tree and they fell asleep".

Search operation

Ngoepe added that, when the parents woke up around 19:00, their youngest child was missing.

They reported her disappearance to police who launched a search operation.

Ngoepe said the search operation included Witpoort police, members of the provincial search and rescue unit, the air wing and members from the Lephalale cluster K9.

The toddler's body was found on Monday afternoon.
