Cape Town – Around 20 children, who were apparently travelling home from crèche, have been injured after the bakkie they were in collided with a taxi in Mitchell's Plain on Thursday afternoon.

“We had one adult in the bakkie who was also injured. The bakkie apparently had three children in the front and 20 in the back,” said the city’s traffic services spokesperson Richard Coleman.

“Apparently there was a canopy on, but with the collision it came off.”

He said 19 kids, aged between 3 and 5, were slightly injured.

The accident took place at the intersection of Weltevreden Road and Highlands Drive around 15:00.

According to ER24 spokesperson Chitra Bodasing, at least 20 children were treated on scene and transported to various hospitals.

“The exact cause of the collision is unknown. Authorities were on scene for further investigations,” she said.
