A fire broke out on the slopes above Scarborough, Cape Town, in the early hours of Monday morning, and was spreading towards the Ocean View informal settlement. News24 Live went down the South Peninsula to investigate. Watch. WATCH

Johannesburg - At least 20 shacks were destroyed as a large fire swept through Scarborough, Cape Town, on Monday afternoon.

There were no reports of injuries after the fire in the informal settlement in the Ocean View area, the city's fire and rescue services spokesperson Theo Layne said.

The fire had spread to several areas and was posing a danger to property, but firefighters were trying to contain it.

Five helicopters were water-bombing the blaze, which was being fanned by a strong south-easterly wind. The rocky terrain made it difficult for emergency vehicles to reach some areas.

"We will be here for quite some time still," he said.

The cause of the fire was not immediately clear. Layne said it had started earlier on Monday morning.
