20 trapped in crashed Meyerton bus

Pretoria - Twenty people were trapped inside a bus that plummeted off a bridge in Meyerton, in the Vaal Triangle, on Monday morning, paramedics said.

At least 85 people were injured in the crash on the R551, Verwoerd road, said Netcare 911 spokesperson Jeff Wicks.

"We have called for additional ambulances from outside this area to come and assist us. It seems we have around 20 people trapped inside," he said.

The driver apparently lost control of the vehicle, which hit the rails of the bridge, then plummeted 10 metres to the ground, landing on its side.

No one died.

  • leendert.stolk.3 - 2012-06-25 11:40

    I count 20 + 85 = 105 people... Was this a triple-decker??

      leendert.stolk.3 - 2012-06-25 12:12

Ignore my comment. As long as it was at least a double-decker, the numbers make sense. However, fear it was not and it was overcrowded which ultimately is the governments fault, not the people 'forced' to board it.

Were any passengers trapped because the emergency exits did not work or were they trapped in/under wreckage?

  • leratojames.selwane - 2012-06-25 12:45

Its a relief to learn that no one died..!! I am tired of hearing these "at-least one person died"..!!
