Rustenburg - This year's local government elections are going to be one of the toughest for the ANC, President Jacob Zuma said on Friday.

"We said we are the servants of the people. If that is the case, we cannot ignore the views of the people. We can't force down their throats the comrades we love and prefer," he said at a cake cutting ceremony at the Rustenburg Civic Centre.

"This time more than any other time it is important that we appreciate that this election is going to be tougher than the previous ones."

The ANC was in Rustenburg celebrating its 104th anniversary.

Zuma would deliver the party's traditional January 8 statement at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Saturday.

The ANC would continue to work towards building a better South Africa, he said.

"The ANC is preparing for local government elections. We have done a lot to change the face of local government and improve services. We will be going to our people to hear what else they want us to do to further improve local government."

He wanted representatives of the party's branches to listen to people's concerns.

The local government elections would see political parties fighting for control of the country's metros. The Democratic Alliance and Economic Freedom Fighters have vowed to take the Johannesburg, Tshwane, and Nelson Mandela Bay metros from the ANC.
