Johannesburg - A total of 210 rhino have been poached since the beginning of the year, the department of environmental affairs said on Monday.

In the Kruger National Park alone, 127 rhino were illegally killed, spokesperson Albi Modise said in a statement.

"Government views the poaching of this national treasure in a very serious light and continues to prioritise our fight against this crime through co-ordinated, joint efforts," he said.

Twenty-nine rhino were poached in Limpopo, 22 in KwaZulu-Natal and 19 in North West.

A total of 165 poachers were arrested in the same period, 67 of them in the Kruger National Park.

Modise appealed to the public to report rhino poaching or any information that could lead to arrests.

Those perpetrators that get caught should be shown no mercy, cut off their hands or something maybe then people will start taking this issue seriously..jail does nt help muc!

wish homicide was taken more seriously jst like this bt in SA a rhinos life is more serious than a persons life

  • lmadikwe - 2012-05-07 23:57

why don't we de-horn all rhinos. we would rather have living rhinos without horns than carcasses without horns.

  • Sueki Gotha-Billy Fitzgerald - 2012-05-08 01:36

well if we had a president who actually cared whats happening in this country, maybe then it wouldn't be so bad, but every time before election, there are promises made, and then broken. because people fall for it.

    Just kill the poachers

medieval terror tactics would work best, impale them on the fence line, for their brothers to see, let the occasional one go mamed to spread the word of the horrors he witnessed happening to his comrades.

This just grinds my gears, don't these people ever stop, don't they see what they doing to our wildlife... I mean I guess South Africa must realise that our "Big Five" will no longer exist.

  • Deana - 2012-05-08 06:57

When will this butchering stop? Until there are no rhinos left to poach? Government- open your eyes- kill all poachers and ban all asians from SA!

  • Antipoaching - 2012-05-08 08:04 Please read this heartfelt plea from Dr Will Fowlds, the vet who has been treating the Kariega Game reserve rhino (Thandi) who survived a vicious poaching attempt....... I've reached the point where I dread the full (or "poachers") moon :-(

  • Richard - 2012-05-08 08:42

my fiance and i are very much against poaching and i think the people who are behind this should be stopped , but the poachers are the same people that are protecting them, how is it that in the kruger "there safe ground" that is where most of the killings are happening, money money and corruption

  • Richard - 2012-05-08 08:45

answer me this , why is it that where the rhinos are supposed to be safe , the kruger is where most of the poaching is happening, come on people if its not corruption then the rangers themselves are been corrupted by money ,if it carries on like this by the year 2015 the only rhinos we will see is thosein photos ,

I agree with you Lelethu Nyenyeku Maboho they care more for the animals, We as South Africans pay so much to enter these parks, it is disgusting........... At St Lucia the river is a toilet but you pay R450 for a family of 4 to go on a boat, R160 for the 4 to go to Cape Vidal, no life guard to help if some thing happens........... but make sure someone will ask for you fishing licence (again more money)

The Department of Environmental affairs is completely useless. But then come to think of it is there any Department that isn't useless?.

  • Michael - 2012-05-09 15:18

The problem its the stoopid easterners of this world....instead of paoching why can the trade be legalised....there's huge stockpiles and you could farm rhino horn....why can't the wwf see this.......beacuase theyre idiots sitting in New York with their fingers up eachothers arses

  • stefan.vanderspuy - 2012-05-14 09:31

I'll bet my last penny that there's collusion between poachers and game rangers throughout SA, and especially in KNP.

  • philschalkwyk - 2012-05-14 14:45

The majority of Rhino poached is in Kruger Park and the Rangers are suspected as being the main key to the problem. They should undergo regular Lie detector tests to establish the possibility of their involvement and suspended if guilty.
