Cape Town - Twenty-four illegal immigrants were arrested and 26 vehicles impounded in Nyanga, City of Cape Town metro police said on Friday.

On Wednesday, an operation was conducted in Emms Drive after authorities received complaints about unlawful activity in the area, safety and security director Richard Bosman said.

"Officers cordoned off and searched the area, resulting in the arrest of 24 illegal immigrants," he said.

Twenty-six vehicles were impounded for being unroadworthy or unlicensed.

Fines for various offences were issued totalling R194 400.

City law enforcement, metro police, traffic police, and the SA Police Service took part in the operation.

Bosman said a follow-up operation was planned to prevent a recurrence of criminal activities in the area.

      George - 2012-03-02 15:42

you take the words out of my mouth! This is exactly how team work in this country can ultimately reduce crime.

      Hallo - 2012-03-02 16:02

Pfft - proves how small-fry cape town is: Yesterday in Johannesburg SAPS, home affairs, JPMD and the security companies had a joint operation and +- 124 illegal immigrants were arrested. This was just around the Fourways area.

  • Roy - 2012-03-02 14:45

Punish the people, severely, who are bringing these illegal immigrants into the country. This is why our South Africans are complaining that they cannot find work. CHEAP LABOUR

      Elle-Black - 2012-03-02 14:56

@ Roy sadly it's not just the work factor,it's the crime factor that concerns me more. I have been robbed twice in my life and both times it was by foreigners.

      Peter-Peter - 2012-03-02 14:58

Uncle Bob did that in Zim...brought in illegal aliens to get votes. It might be much deeper than it seems?

      Marion - 2012-03-02 15:49

@Peter Pan - I know for a fact that some illegal aliens with their illegal South African identity documents vote. Seen the black mark on the nail day after the election.

  • Marion - 2012-03-02 14:53

Please come do the same in Kensington and Malvern in Johannesburg. Vrot with illegal aliens.

leave these people alone! They are just trying to make a life for themselves. If SA (Mbeki) had acted decisively on Mugabe in 1998, they would not be in this mess.

      Marion - 2012-03-02 15:53

@Anton - I don't have a problem with anyone who enters this country as a genuine refugee or through the right channels. Our people also just want to make a life for themselves but are left unhoused and unemployed because there are millions of illegals in SA. I'm talking about the border jumpers who find life home so bad that they go home every Christmas etc., Doesn't sound much like a refugee to me. Also, the Zimbabweans already had an opportunity to legalize their stay in SA. Problem with those who defend the rights of 'these people' is that they are normally the ones paying them peanuts because they are so desperate.

  • Cindy - 2012-03-02 15:11

Wonder who is paying the fines they issued? Clearly not the immigrants

  • Shirley - 2012-03-02 15:20

The tip of the iceberg. However weeldone to those involved-one has to take what one can get!

  • Dennis - 2012-03-02 15:26

Will they ever get the money ?

  • mike.clery - 2012-03-02 15:37

I wonder what "special skills" the many Asian workers have that allows them to live and work in SA? To get work permits/permanent residence is hugely expensive and just about impossible ...

      Marion - 2012-03-02 15:55

@Mike.clery - I think it works a bit like this. I come over from China with my work permit. I invite you over for a holiday. You have a visitors permit. You never go back and the system is so useless at keeping track of who has come into the country vs who has gone back home you just stay forever and a day.

  • David.J.Swart - 2012-03-02 16:16

Whoopeedoo - 24 could probably have been rounded up in one block if they wanted! Not much of a dent will me made on the illegals population in the the country with this great haul!

  • Nana - 2012-03-02 16:55
