Johannesburg - A total of 249 people, including two people wanted for murder, were arrested in weekend operations across Johannesburg, police said on Sunday.

A rape suspect, as well as three suspected hijackers, eight wanted for armed robbery, 16 for common robbery and five for domestic abuse were also among those arrested, said Warrant Officer Xoli Mbele.

The majority of the arrests, however, were for drunk driving (64) and possession of drugs (54).

"Suspects were arrested around Mondeor, Booysens, Moffatview, Langlaagte, Fairlands, Sophiatown, Brixton and the Johannesburg central area," Mbele said.

Most are due to appear in various Johannesburg Magistrate's courts on Monday.
