Johannesburg - A man who raped a woman in front of her family then stole their groceries after the act, was on Thursday sentenced to 25 years in jail in the Eshowe Regional Court, KwaZulu-Natal police said.

Ayanda Zwane, 25, entered the family's home in Matshana area in Empangeni around midnight in February 11, 2014 where he found the woman sleeping with her baby, boyfriend and three other children, Major Thulani Zwane said.

"He tied the boyfriend with the wire, raped the woman, took the groceries from the fridge and fled."

The man was subsequently arrested after DNA samples and an identification parade positively linked him to the crimes.

He would serve a 15 year sentence for the rape and 10 years for the robbery, Zwane said.
