THE Greytown Magistrate’s Court house was packed to capacity yesterday when 28 suspects appeared on weapons charges.

The suspects were taken into custody on Friday last week in the Muden area outside Greytown for possession of illegal firearms.

Last week, members of the National Intervention Unit were deployed in the Greytown area to conduct investigations into illegal firearms which led them to a homestead in the Muden area.

After the home was secured and searched by police, 24 firearms were recovered. Twenty of these firearms, including AK47 rifles, 303 rifles, R1 rifles and 9 mm pistols, were unlicensed.

The 28 accused were remanded in custody for seven days for bail consideration.

According to National Prosecution Authority (NPA) spokesperson Natasha Kara, the charges they face include unlawful possession of firearms, unlawful possession of ammunition and possession of prohibited firearms.
