Johannesburg - Twenty-eight people were injured in a 16-vehicle pile-up on the N12 west in Benoni during rush hour on Friday, emergency services said.

Vehicles were strewn across two lanes of the four lane highway for about 100m, ER24 spokesperson Chitra Bodasing said.

The accident happened near the Tom Jones turnoff.

Twenty-seven people had sustained minor injuries, and one sustained moderate injuries.

They were treated and transported to local hospitals. It was not immediately clear what caused the accident.
