Durban - Four people, including a 6-week-old baby girl, were killed in a collision near Ladysmith, paramedics said on Thursday.

Emergency Medical Services spokesperson Robert McKenzie said the accident occurred on the R103 in Chievely between Estcourt and Colenso late on Wednesday night.

KwaZulu-Natal Road Traffic inspectorate spokesperson Andre Horner said a vehicle with five occupants attempted to do a U-turn  when it was T-boned by another vehicle with three occupants.

He confirmed that four people had died in the crash, including the baby girl.

A paramedic from Sharaj EMS, who attended the scene and spoke on condition of anonymity, said that the three people from the vehicle that was believed to be doing the U-turn died. Two were declared dead at the scene, while a third died at hospital in Ladysmith.

"There was no baby seat," the paramedic said, adding that the child "must have been flung against the windscreen".

She was badly injured and was conscious, but her condition started deteriorating shortly before arriving at hospital.

The infant died 10 minutes after arriving at the hospital.
