Bloemfontein – The University of the Free State (UFS) has shortlisted three people for the rector and vice chancellor position, it said on Tuesday.

The three candidates are deputy vice chancellor at the University of Cape Town Professor Francis Petersen, vice rector: academic at UFS Professor Lis Lange and deputy vice chancellor: student affairs and student housing at the University of Pretoria Professor Themba Mosia.

The university interviewed the three last Friday, spokesperson Lacea Loader told News24.

"After the interviews on Friday the selection committee found all three candidates suitable for employment," Loader said.

The final decision would be made by the university council.

The shortlisted candidates would be introduced to students and staff on October 11, she said.

Former rector and vice chancellor of the university Professor Jonathan Jansen stepped down in August.

Jansen will become a Fellow at the Centre for Advanced Studies in the Behavioural Sciences at Stanford University in the US in September.

Professor Nicky Morgan, current vice rector: operations at the UFS, is currently acting in Jansen's position.

Morgan held a similar position at the Central University of Technology and the University of Johannesburg.

He was interim vice chancellor at Walter Sisulu University, a post to which he was appointed in November 2004.
