3 Cape Town matrics in court for allegedly raping, sexually assaulting pupil

Cape Town – Three Cape Town matric pupils have appeared in court following allegations that they raped and sexually assaulted a younger pupil.

Western Cape police confirmed that the three - who are 17 and 18 years old - remained in custody ahead of their bail application later this week.

The incident allegedly occurred on the grounds of a Steenberg high school on May 27.

Captain FC van Wyk said the girl was 15 years old.

She was a Grade 9 pupil, while the alleged perpetrators were in matric, said Jessica Shelver, spokesperson for provincial education MEC Debbie Schäfer.

Shelver said they viewed the reports "in a very serious light".

Residents and parents of children who attended the school took to Facebook following their arrests.

Some defended the boys, saying they were not gangsters, and accused the victim of lying.

Others called for the full might of the law, or cautioned people not to comment until more facts had been established.

"Our social worker for the school is advising the principal on how to deal with the alleged incident, in line with our Abuse No More protocols," said Shelver.

The district was arranging counselling as required.

The three were expected to return to the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
