Johannesburg - Two adults and a baby died and two adults were critically injured when their car veered off a road and into a river outside Klerksdorp on Tuesday night, paramedics said.

The driver appeared to have lost control of the vehicle after swerving to avoid another car, said Netcare911 spokesperson Jeffrey Wicks.

"Paramedics arrived at the scene to find that two occupants of the vehicle had clambered from the partially submerged wreckage," he said.

The two other adults in the car and a baby were pronounced dead on the scene.

The injured were stabilised and taken to a nearby hospital.
