Durban – Three people were killed and four critically injured in a head-on collision between a minibus taxi and an SUV in KwaZulu-Natal on Monday morning, paramedics said.

Paramedics found the mangled wrecks of the vehicles on the M19 between Pinetown and Durban shortly after midnight, ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said.

Two people and a boy, believed to be 2 years old, were found dead in the SUV. The driver and another boy, around 7 years of age, were alive but trapped inside. Paramedics had to break the doors to get to the critically injured.

Also critically injured and trapped were the taxi driver and his female passenger.

“Paramedics managed to free the woman from the taxi and stabilised her on the scene. It is believed that she is pregnant and paramedics had to act quickly to rush her through to the hospital,” he said.

The taxi driver apparently lost control around a bend and veered into oncoming traffic. Police would investigate.
