Johannesburg - Two pedestrians and a driver were killed in three separate road accidents in the North West on Friday, the provincial public safety department said.

The first happened on the N18 Vryburg/Mafikeng Road when a 66-year-old man was struck by a car, said spokesperson Simon Lesolang Mmope in a statement.

The driver initially fled the scene, but handed himself in to the police four hours later.

In another incident, a 16-year-old pedestrian was hit by a car in Magogwe, Molopo.

The driver was allegedly speeding and under the influence of alcohol when the accident occurred, Mmope said.

A third accident happened in Ganyesa, near Vryburg, when a driver lost control on a curve in the gravel road.

The driver was declared dead on the scene.

In all three accidents police are investigating cases of culpable homicide, Mmope said.

"The department encourages drivers to be patient and refrain from driving at a high speed even in residential areas."

He said the department would show no mercy in its dealings with drunk drivers and those who disregarded the rules of the road.
