Johannesburg - Three men escaped from a bus that was set alight in Butterworth on Tuesday morning, Eastern Cape police said.

Captain Jackson Manatha said the men were sleeping inside the Ndondela Tours bus at a rank when it was set alight.

"The three workers got out of the bus and saw a car speeding away from the crime scene," Manatha said.

One of the men found a 5 litre container of petrol next to the bus.

"The damage was estimated to be more than R100 000 according to one of the workers who was at the crime scene," Manatha said.

No arrests had yet been made.
