3 foreigners bust with rhino horn, tik

2013-02-07 13:33

Johannesburg - Three Chinese nationals have been arrested for alleged possession of a rhino horn and tik in Johannesburg, the Hawks said on Thursday.

Acting on a tip-off, they arrested two Chinese men, aged 30 and 39, and a 28-year-old woman in a hotel room, spokesperson Paul Ramaloko said.

The horn was valued at R120 000 and the confiscated tik had an estimated street value of R1 500.

The three were visitors to the country. It had not yet been established if they were linked to any rhino horn smuggling syndicate.

They would appear in the Germiston Magistrate's Court on Friday on charges of possession of a rhino horn and drugs.

As happy as what I am - this also makes me sad... because our justice system is so bad that very little will happen to these people... the laws need to be changed!

  • talana.malherbe - 2013-02-07 13:52

let's not give up yet. let's hope they try and escape and they get shot.

  • gavindavid.vonmeyer - 2013-02-07 14:04

We must have harsher penalties for foreigners committing crime in our country. The Asians kill our people when they get caught there and we must impose such laws on them, cause we cannot feed millions of foreigners in our jails with our tax budget.

  • Duits - 2013-02-07 14:19

Feed them an overdose of tik, 3 less rubbish on earth or pack their suitcases full of the stuff, get them on the plane back to China then we'll see what happens on the other side!

  • Bongeka - 2013-02-07 14:20

South Africa is slowly but surely becoming a play ground for criminals. If they're in possession and foreigners then they must be involved in this cruel rhino killing and rhino horn smugling. What's more to investigate, because in my eyes they're guilty as charged. South African authorities should stop being so lenient to these scumbags, please.

  • samir.janson - 2013-02-07 14:30

We should charge whoever is caught with rhino horns as if they were the ones that killed the animals. No exceptions. Maybe that will help a bit. It is pathetic how little the justice system helps, even though so much is being done to curb poaching. We have Army style protection, awareness campaigns etc etc. But the rubbishes get away with a slap on the wrist all the time. When will this all stop?

  • johan.syffert - 2013-02-07 14:40

The chinese are raping our country and goverment just sits and watches. Chop this rubbish up into little pieces and feed them to the fish they so love to steal from our shores, that way they at least go home in a way.

  • Andrew2711 - 2013-02-07 14:45

SA needs to take a leaf out of the Asian's playbook. There it is a capital crime to trade/traffic drugs, it should be the same here with Rhino horn. Deploy the military with a shoot-to-kill mandate!

  • My opinion is....... - 2013-02-07 14:47

Zero tolerance, they are directly responsible for the Rhino killings in Africa. I wish animal lovers could get their hands on them!

  • ohbizz.chabata - 2013-02-07 14:51

Why dont the Chinese just enlarge their penises instead of using rhino horns? Shoot them on their digggs!

  • Flippncool - 2013-02-07 15:06

We should do as the Chinese do, how about the death sentence for poaching and drugs?

      Sewela Marcia Rapudubudu - 2013-02-07 17:02

@flippncool I agree with you they deceive death penalty

  • rob.martin.94402343 - 2013-02-07 15:15

They will get off as the Polce will lose the document like in the last case.

  • christopher.m.lowe - 2013-02-07 15:32

    Hang the bastards.

  • Gert van Coller - 2013-02-07 16:08

Like Midnight Oil sings: 'the backbone of this country's broken...' This unrelenting poaching of an endangered species and smuggling of drugs are just some of the heaps of symptoms. Wake up government, you are not there to represent yourselves. History will judge you harshly.

  • pikeyh1ll - 2013-02-07 16:21

greet them outside the court with three small pieces of lead before zuma the idiot sends them back scot free to his best buds in china.

  • sakkie.dekok.5 - 2013-02-07 18:03

Wtf..." Not sure if they were part of a syndicate". Go figure!!! They just do happened to stumble across a few horns.

  • hpodbielski - 2013-02-10 23:36

Put them in jail with the worst criminals and leave them there to rot. Come on justice system, show them you mean business.

  • rob.martin.94402343 - 2013-03-13 12:25

Cut their noses off and send them back to China.
