Johannesburg - An elderly woman and two boys have drowned near Vryburg in the North West, police said on Monday.

Passing residents saw clothes lying at a valley in Taung on Sunday afternoon and investigated, Captain Tselane Nkala said.

"They found the bodies of the two kids, aged four and five inside the shallow valley. Further searches led to the discovery of the woman's body nearby," she said.

"It appeared the woman was washed into the valley by flash floods the previous day. The boys were apparently swimming when they drowned on Sunday."

Nkala said flash floods in the valley were caused by heavy rainfall in the area.

Two inquest dockets have been opened.
