Johannesburg - Three men believed to be behind the kidnapping of a Soweto man have been arrested, police said on Monday.

Police spokesperson Kay Makhubela said the group, originally from Mpumalanga, allegedly kidnapped the man from Emdeni on 27 May.

"They took him from Soweto to Eldorado Park and then they moved him to Mpumalanga," said Makhubela.

The men then contacted the man's family and demanded a ransom.

The family opened a case of kidnapping with police.

They did not pay the ransom.

"Police did investigations and one man was arrested in Soweto on 30 May," said Makhubela.

"The other two were traced in Mpumalanga and were arrested over the weekend."

The kidnapped man was not found.

"They [the kidnappers] say that he escaped from them," said Makhubela.

All three have since been charged with kidnapping.
