Mbombela - Three men died and six others were injured when their bakkie veered off the road into an embankment near Barberton on Friday, Mpumalanga paramedics said.

Spokesperson Vanessa Jackson said the bakkie was towing a trailer on the R40 near the Barberton Medi-Clinic when it rolled 200 metres down a slope.

"The two men in the front cab were trapped in the wreckage and killed," she said.

One of the men sitting on the back died in hospital. Three others were in a critical condition. Another three were being treated for moderate injuries at the Barberton Provincial Hospital.

"It looks like the group was returning from a holiday but at this stage we really don't know much about them or the cause of their bakkie leaving the road," Jackson said.

"The vehicle was so badly mangled that it is even difficult to see if it was a single or double cab."

She said the vehicle resembled a "ball of metal", making rescue very difficult.
