Mbombela - Three people were killed and two seriously injured in a head-on collision near Leandra, Mpumalanga, on Friday, the province's safety and security department said.

Two of the dead were children in their early teens - one in each vehicle, spokesperson Joseph Mabuza said.

The crash happened at 09.40 when an Audi station wagon and a light delivery vehicle (LDV) slammed into each other on the R29, a country road between Leandra and Kinross.

The Audi driver was among those found dead on the scene.

The driver of the LDV and her passenger were seriously injured and the road was closed until around noon for emergency services to take them to hospital, and to clear the scene.

Earlier, the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) said that between Tuesday, March 31 and April 1, when it began monitoring Easter holiday accident statistics, 40 people had been killed in road accidents countrywide.

Spokesperson Simon Zwane said 44 people were killed over the same period last year.

Verified figures for Thursday and Friday were not yet available, he said.

Meanwhile, 302 vehicles had been impounded in Mpumalanga for operating without valid licences.

The RTMC urged motorists to reduce speed, obey the rules of, and avoid travelling at night as the roads were still busy.
