Durban - Three men have been killed and a fourth badly wounded in a shooting on the R74 near KwaMaphumulo on Wednesday night.

It is understood that the men were gunned down by men using automatic weapons. Spent cartridges from an AK47 were found at the scene.

Two independent sources who spoke to News24 on condition of anonymity said the shooting may have been related to taxi violence in the region.

Police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbhele said police officers were on the scene and investigations were underway.

She would not be drawn into commenting on the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

This is a developing story.
