Durban - Three separate accidents involving minibus taxis have left three people dead and scores injured on the eve of Christmas.

Three people were killed early on Thursday morning when a bus and minibus taxi collided on the R617 between Kokstad and Underberg in southern KwaZulu-Natal.

Sixteen other people were hurt in the smash, the cause of which has yet to be determined.

KwaZulu-Natal EMS spokesperson Robert McKenzie described the accident as "tragic".

"All the victims were from the minibus, and no-one in the bus was injured. In addition to the three fatalities, a total of 16 other people were treated for injuries, which were mostly critical in nature," he said.

"The patients were stabilised at the scene before being transported to several nearby hospitals for continued medical care," McKenzie added.

In another incident, 17 people were injured when a taxi and a bakkie collided and rolled on the R707, about 15km out of Marquard in the Free State.

ER24 spokesperson Chitra Bodasing said paramedics and other services arrived on scene and found both vehicles on the side of the road.

"Paramedics assessed the patients, two from the bakkie and the rest from the taxi, and found that they sustained minor to serious injuries," she said.

In Limpopo, medics attended to a scene on Lephalale Road where a taxi and bakkie collided.

Netcare911 spokesperson Athlenda Matha said ten people were hurt. All had sustained minor injuries.
