Johannesburg - Three mine workers were shot dead on Wednesday and 15 others wounded during a strike outside a mine in Boitekong, north of Rustenburg, North West police said.

About 250 miners who had been striking illegally for the past two weeks gathered outside the K5 Khwezi mine on Wednesday afternoon, Brigadier Thulani Ngubane said.

"There was a confrontation between members of the security and the unruly employees. Security guards fired shots at the mineworkers, killing three, while 15 others were injured."

Ngubane said petrol bombs were confiscated from mine workers.

"Ballistic testing will be done on the security guards' [guns] and post mortems will be conducted."

No arrests had been made yet and cases of murder and attempted murder were being investigated. Ngubane said the situation was calm and police were monitoring the area.

Can you imagine the press if this happened under Apartheid? All the media in the world would be showing these pictures over and over to show how badly the blacks were being treated. Under the ANC watch....nothing. Zip, zero, FO. The hypocrisy of the media and who they chose to support is astounding.

This violence is beyond tolerable. What do COSATU say? Why are they not backing the strike - because it offends government?

3 people have been killed in Boitekong Mine-Northwest in Rustenburg. Oh no come on guys, was it really necessary for those security guards to shoot and kill those people. Yes it's understandable that there were some unruly employees during the strike but you can't opt to kill at least they could've used pepper sprays instead.

what were the securities supposed to do when they were confronted with petrol bombs, they fought fire with fire. those miners were on illegal strike and NUM was not part of their strike. they went on strike because they wanted 150% increase on their salaries. its a pity that some of them are dead and their poor families are going to suffer because of their illegal strike. my condolences to their families.

shebomminele - have you heard of minimum force? so because NUM was not part of the strike it is Ok to kill?

Unruly mobs, especially those with jobs, need to be taken out. They cannot be allowed to hold the rest of the country at ransom with their violent indiscretions!
