Pietermaritzburg - A three-week old baby was among those injured in a midnight crash on the N3 in Pietermaritzburg which claimed the lives of three people.

Netcare 911 spokesperson says the paramedics and other emergency services responded to the “horrific” scene on the N3 North at the New England Road off ramp just before 00:00.

“Reports from the scene indicate that an errant party had crossed the centre median and collided head-on with another vehicle travelling in the opposite direction,” he said.

“Paramedics arrived at the scene and found accident debris and the twisted frames of the vehicles, consistent with that of a high impact collision, spread over the highway. After the injured were examined, it was found that three people tragically died, one was in a critical condition, while two others sustained seriously injured. One of the seriously injured was a three-week-old baby.”

Various paramedics stabilised the injured before transporting them to hospital.

Authorities are investigating.
