300+ cops charged with aiding escapees

Cape Town - More than 300 police officers in South Africa were charged with aiding escapees last year, according to a parliamentary reply by Police Minister Nathi Nhleko.

In addition to the 327 officers charged in the 2014/15 financial year, another 78 were charged between April 1 2015 and June 30 2015.

The Western Cape had the highest number of police officers charged last year - 102 - and so far between the April and June period, another 15 had been charged.

The lowest figure last year was in Limpopo with four officers charged, and for this year, the Eastern Cape with one officer charged.

Last year in the Eastern Cape, 40 police officers were charged, the Free State 30, Gauteng 51, KwaZulu-Natal had 34, Mpumalanga was on 44, North West on 16 and the Northern Cape on six.

This year, besides the one officer in Eastern Cape, 14 were charged in the Free State, four in Gauteng, 16 in KwaZulu-Natal, two in Limpopo, 10 in Mpumalanga, and three in the North West and Northern Cape.
