Johannesburg - Thirty-two people have been injured and three killed in road accidents around the country since Thursday night.

A man was killed on the R21 just past Nellmapius Road in Erasmuspark on the way to Pretoria, paramedics said on Friday.

"A light delivery vehicle had rear-ended a heavy goods vehicle [on Thursday night]," Netcare 911 spokesperson Santi Steinmann said.

"Upon assessment of the occupant of the light delivery vehicle, paramedics found that a man had tragically lost his life during the crash due to the extensive injuries sustained."

The driver of the heavy goods truck was not injured.

On Friday morning, a cyclist in his 20s was killed after being hit a car while riding on the N8 outside Bloemfontein, ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said.

"Paramedics from the ER24 Bloemfontein branch arrived on scene and found the lifeless body of the cyclist lying 10m away in the veld.

"The light motor vehicle that had collided with the cyclist had parked a few metres away on the side of the road," said Meiring.

The driver of the car was not injured.

Smouldering wreckage

Also on Friday, a motorcyclist was killed when he crashed into a truck in the west of Johannesburg.

"A man in his 30s was killed this morning after his motorcycle t-boned a truck on the R41 in Randfontein, west of Johannesburg.

"When ER24 paramedics arrived on scene, they found the smouldering wreckage of the motorcycle lying in the middle of the road. A truck had stopped a short distance away from the motorcycle," said Meiring.

A woman was injured on Thursday night on the N4 in Pretoria when she crashed her car into a bridge pillar on the highway, said Steinmann.

The woman was seriously injured and taken to hospital. The cause of the accident was not known.

On Friday morning alone, 28 people were injured in three separate accidents.

Ten people were injured in Edenvale, Johannesburg when a bus and truck collided on the R24, ER24 said.

The 10 people, who were passengers on the bus, had sustained minor injuries.

They were taken to One Military Hospital in Pretoria, ER24's Meiring said.

Taxi overturns

In Limpopo, 15 people were injured on Friday when a taxi overturned on the R521 about 20km outside Polokwane.

"Paramedics, along with other services, arrived on scene and found an overturned taxi lying on the side of the road," Meiring said.

"The occupants from the vehicle were found walking around on scene."

No one was seriously injured. Those who needed treatment were taken to Seshego Hospital.

On the M19 in Melkbosstrand four people were injured in a head-on collision.

Meiring said paramedics found one of the cars in the middle of the road, while the other lay off the side of the road.

Two occupants from each vehicle had minor injuries.

In Randburg, Johannesburg, three people were injured on Friday morning when a taxi overturned on the Jan Smuts and Republic Road intersection.

"[Paramedics] found the taxi lying on its side in the middle of the road," Meiring said.

"The occupants of the taxi were standing around on the scene."

It was understood that the taxi driver had lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn."

"The taxi was eventually pushed upright by a crowd of bystanders," he said.
