Johannesburg - Two men were sentenced to 37 years in prison after being found guilty of robbery, rape and murder by the Eastern Cape High Court on Tuesday, police said.

Abongile Gedezana, 23, and Ayanda Malusi, 21, were sentenced to five years in prison for robbery, 10 years for rape and 22 years for murder, Lieutenant Colonel Mtati Tana said.

Their sentences would be served concurrently.

The two broke into a caravan in January last year. Armed with knives, and drunk, they attacked and raped a 60-year-old woman and critically injured her. She died in hospital later.

The pair also stole some items from the woman's caravan.

Eastern Cape police quoted Judge J Hartle telling the pair: "Your actions degraded the dignity of the woman and she was left traumatised and stressed, as she gave up all hope of living again, she was left dirty by your actions".

a concurrent sentence, that means they'll only serve 22years at the most. They'll be out of jail in their mid 40's still able bodied and now educated by the rest of the criminals on how to do things better. That is of course assuming that the jails don't get too full and they start letting out prisoners early to make space. What idiot made up the rule that you can only spend a maximum of 25years in prison?

What happened to "let the punishment fit the crime"? This is not punishment - a woman lost her life, and a family lost a loved one. Hence, the violent crimes will just continue it's merry ride in SA:-(
