Four men have been arrested for the murder of a 52-year-old high school teacher outside Giyani, in Limpopo, police said on Tuesday.

Thomas Ngobeni from Ka-Nwamakena, outside Giyani, was found dead in the bushes at the weekend.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said examination papers were found next to his body, which was covered in gunshot wounds.

The police in Namakgale, the Rhino 9 task team and the Phalaborwa community policing forum received a tip-off about the suspects from community members.

Facing charges

Ngoepe said the four men, aged between 27 and 42, were traced to the Namakgale policing area, outside Phalaborwa, where they were arrested in the early hours of Monday morning.

He said one of the men was also linked to several violent crimes which included house and business robberies, farm attacks and murders.

He had previously escaped from custody at Bushbuckridge police station in Mpumalanga.

Police recovered a car believed to have been hijacked from the teacher, three firearms and 34 rounds of live ammunition.

The suspects are expected to appear in the Namakgale Magistrate's Court on Tuesday to face charges of possession of firearms and ammunition and for being in possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle.

They are also expected to appear in the Giyani Magistrate's Court later on Tuesday on charges of murder and hijacking.
