Durban - Four school children were killed and scores were injured when their bus plunged down a cliff in Inanda, Durban, on Friday, paramedics said.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said four pupils were killed, 14 were critically injured, 17 were seriously injured, and 30 suffered minor injuries.

Botha said ropes were used to pull the injured up to the road. They were taken to nearby hospitals.

The Red Cross's Air Mercy helicopter airlifted some of the injured.

Botha said it was believed the children were from Umzinto, on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast, and had been attending a sporting event in Inanda.

The reason for the bus driver veering off the road was not known. He was believed to be among those critically injured.

The eThekwini metro police, fire brigade, and the provincial ambulance service were on the scene.

Not out of disrespect or a lack of sympathy, but we are getting used to it. Some real honesty required.

Yesterday it was the goats. Wonder what today's excuse will be? Just hold tight Mr. Zoomzoom, the tally will be at 34 soon. Only 3600 road victims till Xmas... Oh....and Mr Tootoot, your absence in the streets marching, or your well trained voice is surely missed re the matter.....

May the souls of those kids rest in peace. And those that are in the hospital, may they get well soon. As for the affected families, may God give them the strength to survive this ordeal.\r\n\r\nNow I know that the journalists of news24 don't get the precise facts before they write. A friend told me that five kids pass on.
