Johannesburg - Four people died when a car crashed into a dump truck in Pietermaritzbug on Wednesday night, paramedics said.

"Upon arrival on the scene paramedics found that an Audi cabriolet's soft top was ripped off as the vehicle rolled and lay quite a distance from where the vehicle had come to rest," ER24 spokesperson Vanessa Jackson said in a statement on Thursday.

The accident happened after the Audi crossed the intersection of Durban and Alexander Roads.
Once on Durban road, it side-swiped the truck, overturned, and rolled for about 50m.

It stopped after crashing into a bus stop and was found "crushed, mangled and ripped apart".

Jackson said one of the men was partially trapped in the wreckage, while two were flung out of the car, lying near a petrol station.

The fourth man was found later, trapped underneath a fence in a dark section behind the bus stop.

Jackson said the accident appears to have been caused by the driver of the car losing control of the vehicle.

The driver of the dump truck also lost control of his vehicle after being hit, and crashed through a wall at a block of flats before stopping against a tree.
