Durban – Four people have been killed after two vehicles collided and burst into flames on the N2 between Hibberdene and Port Shepstone, on the south coast of KwaZulu-Natal, police said on Monday.

The accident, between a truck and car, occurred in the Southport area at about 21:30 on Sunday night, said Colonel Thembeka Mbhele.

"Three occupants of the Light Duty Vehicle and one occupant in the sedan died," said Mbhele.

Netcare 911's Shawn Herbst said reports from the scene indicated that the two vehicles had caught alight on impact.

He said the deceased were discovered after the fire had been extinguished.

A case of culpable homicide has been opened.
