Durban - Four people were killed when a taxi and a truck collided, after one of the passengers in the minibus attacked the driver, the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport said on Sunday.

In a statement, the department said that preliminary reports indicated that a passenger, who is a psychiatric patient, allegedly attacked the driver of the taxi while it was in motion.

This distracted the driver, leading to the taxi crashing into a truck on the N2, between eMpangeni and eNseleni.

"There were four people who died on the scene, while five sustained critical injuries. They were taken to Ngwelezane and Richards Bay hospitals," the statement reads.

"It is alleged that the passenger grabbed the driver's throat, causing him to lose control of the vehicle... and collided with a truck which was travelling in the slow lane."

The truck was travelling from Mtubatuba to Durban.

Transport MEC Mxolisi Kaunda reacted with disbelief, saying an urgent investigation was needed.
